Discover Finikounda

The destination Messinia, Greece

Discover Finikounda

Swim on golden beaches, eat fresh fish by the water, and explore the castles and exotic islets of Messinia.

The village

A fishing village that never grew up

Finikounda sits on the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese, between Methoni and Koroni, on one of the few stretches of Greek coast that has stayed genuinely small. Boats still come in each morning, the tavernas are still family-run, and the beaches on either side of the village are among the best in Messinia.

It is a place to swim, eat well, and drive somewhere extraordinary in under half an hour — then come back and do nothing at all.

Beaches

Where to swim

Four beaches within easy reach, from the organised sand in front of the village to bays you'll likely have to yourself.

Finikounda Beach

Finikounda Beach

In the village

The large organised sandy beach right in front of the village — shallow, sheltered and easy, with sunbeds, water sports and somewhere to eat never more than a minute away. The obvious choice with children.

Golden sand

A long golden beach with crystal-clear turquoise water and space to spread out. Come late in the day — it is one of the best places on this coast to watch the sun go down.

Tsapi

Hidden bay

A quiet, tucked-away bay of green-blue water a short drive from Finikounda. Little more than sand, sea and a view across to Venetiko island — which is rather the point.

More secluded

Two beautiful, more secluded spots for days when you want the coast largely to yourself. Bring water and something to sit on; there is nothing here but the sea.

Worth the drive

Two Venetian castles, a working harbour town and a boat trip to uninhabited islands — all within an easy morning of Finikounda.

Methoni Castle

Methoni Castle

12km away

An immense Venetian sea fortress built out into the water, with a stone causeway running to the octagonal Bourtzi tower. Go in the late afternoon, when the walls turn gold and the crowds thin out.

Koroni

Koroni

35km away

A picturesque town with the feel of an island: painted houses stacked above a working harbour, and a castle at the top that is still partly a working monastery.

Sapientza

Sapientza

By boat

A boat trip out to the uninhabited islands opposite Finikounda, known for a rare forest of strawberry trees and water so clear the seabed looks close enough to touch.

Inside the walls

Methoni

Once through the gate, the fortress opens into a whole abandoned town — bath houses, churches, cisterns and ramparts you can walk almost the entire way around.

Dinner where the boats come in

The tavernas in Finikounda sit directly on the sand, and much of what reaches the table came off a boat in the same harbour that morning. Order the fish, ask what's good, and expect the answer to change daily.

Around it, the village keeps its own rhythm — local recipes, long tables, and the sort of evening that starts late and finishes later.
